Marnie smoothed down the pink silk dress and twirled in front of her bedroom mirror. The dress was high in the front with a low waterfall back. She had a silver bracelet that was an intricate woven rose vine at her wrist, tiny rose earrings, and matching silver shoes with a rosette over the open toe. She didn’t hate the dress, in fact, she could imagine it would be gorgeous in a deep winter green, but her mother had instructed her and her sister to wear shades of pink and so she’d obliged. Why she needed to blend in with the décor she didn’t know, but in this case, she didn’t care, she was happy to be as low profile as possible.

Mal was going to make that hard. She’d seen him in a suit many times, and he was hard to ignore all dressed up. She found him hard to ignore anytime if she was honest. It wasn’t just his imposing frame or the piercing gaze that seemed to find her wherever she was. Sure, he was tall and intense, but beneath that there was so much more. This weekend he’d given her his undivided attention, and she’d expected to be crushed by it, that it would be too much for her, yet instead, it felt like just enough. He was attentive but not overbearing, and she liked it, maybe too much given that in a couple of days it was back to New York and situation normal.

A rap on the door broke her from her thoughts.

“Come in.” Her grandmother pushed the door open. She was all dressed up in a soft silver shift with a matching jacket. If she got the memo to wear pink, she was ignoring it.

“Don’t you look lovely,” her grandmother said, crossing the room.

“So do you.”

“We don’t scrub up too badly, huh?”

Marnie laughed as she heard the band start to warm up. “I guess not. It looks like the party is about to get going.”

“Ah yes, I’m not sure all this is really necessary . . .” her voice trailed off. Marnie found that odd, one of the few things her mother and grandmother agreed on was the importance of celebrating milestones. They did both love a big party.

“Are you okay?”

She waved a dismissing hand. “Of course, I am. I just think these two are rushing into things and your mother is pushing too hard.”

Interesting, Marnie thought. “Well, they have been together a while.”

“Back in my day, this was the norm of course, lots of women only went to college just to find a husband, but that little chick should be spreading her wings like you have.”

Marnie smiled. “Well, to each their own.”

“Speaking of which. your beau seems lovely, Marnie. Might be a keeper.”

Marnie doubted that, at least for her. She went for a noncommittal response. “He really is a great guy.”

“Yes, so what do the young people say, you might want to lock that down.”

Marnie laughed. “Come on, you, there’s a whole party of people for you to share your wisdom with.
